An Overnight Train Journey Through Scotland

I have been dreaming of taking an overnight train ever since I was 14 years old, when I read Agatha Christie’s novel, “Murder on the Orient Express.” Last month, I had the pleasure of riding on the Royal Scotsman train which was probably the most elegant train (and experiences) I have ever encountered. We planned this trip to celebrate a special birthday. Never having been to Scotland, I thought this was the perfect way to experience the rugged and remote highland scenery. Owned and operated by Belmond, the Royal Scotsman offers several itineraries of overnight trips. We chose to do a 3 night, 4 day trip from Edinburgh.

The journey started at the Waverly train station in Edinburgh with a Highlander playing the bagpipes. We were welcomed on board in the Observation Car which was a cozy living room, full of tartan plaids and wood paneled walls.  A lovely bar was situated front and center, with more whiskey bottles than I ever imagined. After a brief welcome and overview, we were escorted to our room which was compact, yet comfortable enough for the two of us.

As the train climbed North, I sat on my bed looking out the window thinking I was in a movie, it was that magical

Dining is definitely a production on this train. There are two dining cars that are elegantly restored from the 1960’s. Each table was set with beautiful tablecloths, fresh flowers and candlelight. It was incredibly romantic and felt as though we were taking a voyage back in time. We were expected to dress for the occasion, and everyone seemed quite happy to oblige. The food itself was incredibly fresh and traditional, featuring local ingredients and a modern take on traditional dishes.

From the fresh fish, to the scotch porridge – I was pleasantly surprised how well they managed to feed 38 people from a tiny kitchen. Of course, I had to peak in and meet the chef. I was in awe of how well organized that space was, which included a large kitchen aid mixer and a gas range of my dreams.

After dinner, local musicians entertained which lead to endless dancing and whiskey tastings. The house rule: the bar stays open until the last guest is ready for bed-one night being 5 am (this was not me, as I was in bed by 1:30.)

Each day we experienced different excursions from hiking to waterfalls to visiting distilleries for whiskey tastings. However, many of the highlights were viewed from the moving train including crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct, commonly known as the Harry Potter Bridge as it was featured in the films with the Hogwart’s Express. The staff were extremely friendly and the outings were well organized, with little surprises in between.  Upon our return each time to the train, we were greeted with freshly made cocktails and champagne. As an extra indulgence and the ultimate form of relaxation, the Royal Scotsman has a Bamford Spa, which of course, I had to try. As you can see by the photo, it is a lovely and naturally designed space, and a perfect way to unwind after a long hike.

Day 4 arrived much too soon, and I reluctantly had to say goodbye to my new friends and lovely cabin. Getting off the train and wrestling my way towards the exit of the station definitely brought me back to reality and gave me a huge appreciation for this adventure and a longing to plan my next voyage soon.
